Vznik webové databáze děl a životopisných údajů k malíři Petru Brandlovi (1668–1735) je navázán na rozsáhlejší badatelský projekt Národní galerie v Praze o tomto umělci, jenž zahrnuje vydání několika publikací a souvisí také s přípravou reprezentativní výstavy – to vše pod vedením Andrey Steckerové, kurátorky Sbírky starého umění Národní galerie v Praze. Po smrti největšího znalce Brandlova díla profesora Jaromíra Neumanna († 2001) odborný zájem o Petra Brandla na čas utichl. K vydání Neumannovy rozsáhlé monografie o Brandlovi došlo až patnáct let po jeho smrti (Jaromír Neumann, Petr Brandl, Andrea Steckerová /ed./, Praha 2016). Dosud tedy tomuto významnému baroknímu umělci chybělo celkové zhodnocení díla a také evidence děl v podobě katalogu. Tento fakt byl jedním z podnětů k vytvoření této databáze, jejímž cílem je především prezentace tvorby Petra Brandla v nepřístupnější možné formě – tedy v podobě on-line webové databáze, která je zcela otevřena odborné i laické veřejnosti. Přejeme si, aby sloužila jako podklad pro další bádání, aby byla dobrým nástrojem k orientaci o díle Petra Brandla také studentům, sběratelům a dalším zájemcům o umění. Současně věříme, že se tímto dostane Brandlovo dílo do širšího povědomí také mimo hranice České republiky.
Databáze ve svém základním členění obsahuje katalog děl, literaturu a archiválie, které se vztahují k životu a dílu Petra Brandla. Katalog děl zahrnuje díla, u nichž je Brandlovo autorství potvrzené, ale také díla, která se Brandlovi na základě určitých argumentů připisují.
Součástí některých záznamů v katalogu jsou také restaurátorské zprávy, rentgenogramy a další materiály, které souvisejí s technikou a technologií malby. Pro úplnost jsou zařazeny také grafické listy, které vznikly podle předloh z ruky Petra Brandla a i kresby, u nichž je atribuce největším problémem, nicméně jsme se rozhodli zařadit i ty, které jsou v udání autorství sporné. Chceme tím vyvolat reakci ze strany především odborné veřejnosti, a mít tak možnost diskuse.
Archivní doklady v databázi jsou ediční prací dr. Jaroslava Prokopa (vychází z jeho knihy: Petr Brandl. Život a dílo v archivních pramenech a starší odborné literatuře, Praha 2016). Součástí databáze je také bibliografie, kterou uvádíme samostatně formou seznamu a poté je součástí dílčích odkazů v rámci katalogových hesel. Informace v databázi jsou průběžně doplňovány a aktualizovány. Databáze vznikla jako jeden z grantových projektů, jehož řešitelem je Národní galerie v Praze, která tímto děkuje majitelům děl za jejich laskavé svolení k prezentování svěřeného materiálu.

The emergence of a web database of the works and biographical details of the painter Petr Brandl (1668–1735) is linked to the more extensive research project of the National Gallery in Prague concerning this artist, which includes the production of several publications and is also connected with the preparation of a representative exhibition – all under the guidance of Andrea Steckerová, Curator of the Old Masters Collection of the National Gallery in Prague. After the death of the greatest expert on Brandl’s work, Professor Jaromír Neumann († 2001), professional interest in Petr Brandl in the Czech Republic abated. The publication of Neumann’s extensive monograph on Brandl did not come to fruition until fifteen years after his death (Jaromír Neumann, Petr Brandl, Andrea Steckerová /ed./, Praha 2016). Until then this important Baroque artist lacked any overall evaluation of his work and also any record of his works in the form of a catalogue. This fact was one of the stimuli for the creation of this database, the aim of which is first and foremost the presentation of the works of Petr Brandl in the most accessible manner – in the form of an on-line web database, which is fully open to both the professional and the general public. We would like it to be used as a basis for further research and to be a useful instrument for orientation in the work of Petr Brandl also for students, collectors and others interested in art. At the same time we are confident that it will help bring Brandl’s work to wider attention even outside the borders of the Czech Republic.
In its basic structure it contains a catalogue of his works, a bibliography and archive material relating to the life and work of Petr Brandl. The catalogue of works contains those works whose authorship is confirmed to be that of Brandl, as well as works ascribed to Brandl on the basis of certain arguments.
Also among the records in the catalogue are restoration reports, roentgenograms and other material connected with the technique and technology of painting. For the sake of completeness there are also included graphic prints made according to originals by the hand of Petr Brandl and also drawings, where the attribution is the greatest problem, but even so we decided to include even those where the authorship is dubious. By doing this we hope to provoke reactions, especially on the part of experts, and thus enable discussions to take place. The archive documents in the database are the editorial work of Dr. Jaroslav Prokop (they are taken from his book: Petr Brandl. Život a dílo v archivních pramenech a starší odborné literature (Life and Work in Archive Sources and older literature), Praha 2016). A further part of the database is the bibliography, which we present separately in the form of a list, and then there is the part with partial references within the framework of the catalogue entries. The information in the database is constantly supplemented and updated. The database came into existence as one of the grant projects researched by the National Gallery in Prague, which hereby thanks the owners of the works for their kind permission to present the entrusted material.
